A Declaration Of Color Blindness - Free Essay Example

Trayvon Martin was fatally shot by a white police officer on February 26, 2012. The very same officer was acquitted on July 13, 2013 after claiming it was self defense to an all female jury. Following this acquisition, three black organizers created the movement known today as Black Lives Matter, all by creating the new hashtag #blacklivesmatter. Though they officially coined the term, there is no official leader, no rulesheet, just a call to value black lives for what they are human beings. In a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise, it is an affirmation of Black folks humanity, our contributions to this society, and our resilience in the face of deadly oppression(Khan-Cullors). Yet arguments continue to go around, with another popular hashtag eventually reaching trending called #alllivesmatter. They criticize the black lives matter movement, saying we are all brothers and sisters, that the saying is too narrow. Arent they right? In the end, shouldnt every person be valued the same as the other? Or maybe something else has gone into the slogan of Black Lives Matter, and not them putting their own on a pedestal. The idea that racism no longer exists in America shouldnt even be a thought racing in someones mind, yet people continually believe we could end racism when Jim Crow laws ended. But did we really? If we did, then why, when we hear about someone gets murdered by a police officer, see a black person more often than someone white? People of color represent thirty eight point five percent of the population, but fifty one point five percent of all lives lost in the years 2015-2016(Fox, 2018). Police violence is disproportionately affecting black people, along with Hispanics and people with native American backgrounds. Yet, we have seemingly ended racism so, its just a coincidence, right? We, after all, did elect a black man to become president, so this is obviously a post-racial America. A post racial America where all lives should matter instead of just the ones being disproportionately shot and killed by police officers. Bill Maher expressed that All Lives Matter implies that lives are equally at risk, and theyre not. By saying All Lives Matter, it is an attempt to diminish the ongoing reality of the fact that white supremacy still exists. By saying All Lives Matter, they are silencing those trying to make a difference and take down the unjust that holds racial equality at bay. The All Lives Matter movement is a declaration of color blindness, a declaration of everyone is equal so everyones lives should matter. In a way, they are right. American football player Richard Sherman said I stand by what I said that All Lives Matter and that we are all human beings. In 2017, police shot and killed just short of 1,000 people, tallying in nine hundred eighty-seven people dead at the hands of the officers. White males continued to account for the largest group of people killed while armed with guns or knives, at 330 of those killed. Black males armed with guns or knives were fatally shot in 160 cases last year(Sullivan, Anthony, Tate, Jenkins, 2018.) Seeing as more white men were killed by police, shouldnt all lives matter? Shouldnt everyone be fighting for all lives to be stopped by police brutality. When asked which statement is closest to their own views, 78% of Likely U.S. Voters say all lives matter(Rasmussen 2015) All Lives Matters claims they are not doing an ything wrong, they are just fighting for us all, believing that everyone are brothers and sisters and should be treated equally, no race above another one. For more than four centuries, black people have experienced more hardships than one can imagine, from slavery to civil rights to the continued prejudice against them today. They are standing up for themselves with Black Lives Matter. All Lives Matter is racist. Black Lives matter was never intended to imply that on black lives do matter. None of that is hate for white living. It is about realizing that white people already have privilege and do not need to constantly worried if there is a target on their back. It is about recognizing that while our lives do matter, there are other lives right now, that matter more. There are other lives that have been full of hardship, that need help from others with privilege. By saying All Lives Matter, you are erasing that cry for help. By saying All Lives Matter, you are pretending nothings wrong. Black Lives Matter is saying that they recognize that white lives already do matter. It is a statement of their lives also matter ing. It is saying blac k lives matter, too.

Physical Constants, Prefixes, and Conversion Factors

Here are some useful physical constants, conversion factors, and unit prefixes. They are used in many calculations in chemistry, as well as in physics and other sciences. Useful Constants A physical constant is also known as a universal constant or a fundamental constant. It is a quantity that has a constant value in nature. Some constants have units, while others do not. While the physical value of a constant does not depend on its units, obviously changing the units is associated with a numerical change. For example, the speed of light is a constant, but it is expressed as a different number in meters per second compared to miles per hour. Acceleration of Gravity 9.806 m/s2 Avogadros Number 6.022 x 1023 Electronic Charge 1.602 x 10-19 C Faraday Constant 9.6485 x 104 J/V Gas Constant 0.08206 Latm/(molK)8.314 J/(molK)8.314 x 107 gcm2/(s2molK) Plancks Constant 6.626 x 10-34 Js Speed of Light 2.998 x 108 m/s p 3.14159 e 2.718 ln x 2.3026 log x 2.3026 R 19.14 J/(molK) 2.3026 RT (at 25C) 5.708 kJ/mol Common Conversion Factors A conversion factor is a quantity used to convert between one unit and another via multiplication (or division). A conversion factor changes the units of a measurement without changing its value. The number of significant digits in a conversion factor may affect the conversion in some cases. Quantity SI Unit Other Unit Conversion Factor Energy joule calorieerg 1 cal = 4.184 J1 erg = 10-7 J Force newton dyne 1 dyn = 10-5 N Length metre or meter ngstrm 1 = 10-10 m = 10-8 cm = 10-1 nm Mass kilogram pound 1 lb = 0.453592 kg Pressure pascal baratmospheremm Hglb/in2 1 bar = 105 Pa1 atm = 1.01325 x 105 Pa1 mm Hg = 133.322 Pa1 lb/in2 = 6894.8 Pa Temperature kelvin CelsiusFahrenheit 1C = 1 K1F = 5/9 K Volume cubic metre litregallon (U.S.)gallon (U.K.)cubic inch 1 L = 1 dm3 = 10-3 m31 gal (U.S.) = 3.7854 x 10-3 m31 gal (U.K.) = 4.5641 x 10-3 m31 in3 = 1.6387 x 10-6 m3 While a student should learn how to perform unit conversions, in the modern world there are accurate online unit converters in all the search engines. SI Unit Prefixes Metric system or SI units are based on factors of ten. However, most units prefixes with names are 1000 times apart. The exception are near the base unit (centi-, deci-, deca-, hecto-). Usually, a measurement is reported using a unit with one of these prefixes. Its a good idea to become comfortable converting between factors as they are used in all scientific disciplines. Factors Prefix Symbol 1024 yotta Y 1021 zetta Z 1018 exa E 1015 peta P 1012 tera T 199 giga G 106 mega M 103 kilo k 102 hecto h 101 deca da 10-1 deci d 10-2 centi c 10-3 milli m 10-6 micro 10-9 nano n 10-12 pico p 10-15 femto f 10-18 atto a The ascending prefixes (e.g., tera, peta, exa) are derived from Greek prefixes. Within 1000 factors of a base unit, there are prefixes for each factor of 10. The exception is 1010, which is used in distance measurements for the angstom..Beyond this, factors of 1000 are used. Very large or very small measurements are usually expressed using scientific notation. A unit prefix is applied with the word for a unit, while its symbol is applied together with a units symbol. For example, it is correct to cite a value in units of either kilograms or kg, but it is incorrect to give the value as kilog or kgrams. Sources Cox, Arthur N., ed. (2000). Why Markets May Fail to Generate Socially Desirable Outcomes

Discuss why markets may fail to generate socially desirable outcomes. The term market refers to the group of consumers (households, firms or government) that is interested in product or service and has the resources to purchase that product. Acquiring the product and/or getting a service are always permitted by law and other regulations. The market definition begins with the total population and progressively narrows as show in the following diagram. Market definition Conceptual diagram The size of the market is not fixed and depends on the product price. It is increasing while increasing the prices and decreasing while decreasing the prices. In addition, qualified markets can be increased through changes in legislation†¦show more content†¦Interests of consumers and suppliers are harmonized - brought into equilibrium. In this model, prices are determined impersonally in the market and this secures the equality between those demanding the good and those supplying the good. Neoclassical model examines the commodity prices influences by grouping them into two categories; side of supply (such as: right kind of labour, raw materials, machinery, power and the used technology) and side of demand (such as: influences affecting consumer demand e.g. income, lifestyle, age, and the social conventions and expectations) Neoclassical model can reflect one of the causes to market failure; Asymmetric information. It represents the lack of relevant information. The people can not make maximizing decisions if they are poorly informed about the things they are buying or selling. Neoclassical model main weakness is that it models the competitive outcome, i.e. equilibrium, rather than the competitive process. In this point people will never have complete information when responding to economic changes. F.A. Hayek is representing the third theoretical perspective of the competitive market. He admire the basic idea of the Neoclassical model (perfect competition) pointing out its main weakness; lack of emphasis on the process of competitive price information (Neoclassical emphasizing the equilibrium outcome different perspective than Hayek). Discovering My Passion free essay sample

It had been a long Sunday afternoon. Rehearsal was just about to finish but I had one more matter of business to attend to. I had already informed the director and drama teacher, Ms. Carbone, that the first round of mock trial competition was taking place on Tuesday. In an unexpected twist of events, I was going to be presenting the defense pretrial argument before the judge on that day. Just earlier that Sunday morning, the lead position had been wrested away from another member of the team and bestowed upon me. The coaches had decided that my teammate’s performance was bordering near subpar and believed that I had the potential to deliver a powerful pretrial motion in two days. In order to prepare for my first oratory in the courtroom, I was now required to go to my captain’s house for one final practice on Monday night, which also happened to be the same time as play rehearsal. You’re out of the play.† Never in a million years had I expected to hear that response when I announced to Ms. Carbone that I would be missing the last two hours of play rehearsal on Monday for mock trial practice. True, I had skipped a few rehearsals before for mock trial, but in my defense, my role in the fall play was very limited. I played an old grandmother, was in only two scenes, and had but two lines. I sure didn’t think those two lost hours would have made the slightest improvement in my performance during Thursday’s opening night. Nonetheless, my instinctive reaction was to plead with Ms. Carbone and attempt to compromise, like I’ve successfully done so countless times before in the past few months. Except this time, Ms. Carbone refused to listen, even when, in my panicked foolishness, I offered to miss mock trial practice for the dress rehearsal. But Ms. Carbone would not budge, and I stormed out of the theater that Sunday night at ten p.m. with no tears in my eyes; I was far too angry for that. In my mind, I was right and Ms. Carbone was being absurd. I did, however, end up following her advice. Following that incident, I threw myself wholeheartedly into preparing for mock trial, no longer forced to divide my time between two separate worlds. I’d learned my lesson, and the next two years, I didn’t even audition for the play, knowing that I was incapable of maintaining a perfect balancing act for an extended period of time. I realized that no matter how hard I try, I can’t do everything, so I had to choose just one activity to dedicate all my energy to. And I discovered that my passion lies in mock trial, in public speaking and debate. Looking back to that Sunday, I understand now that Ms. Carbone had presented a beautiful gift to me the moment she decided to kick me out of the play: the gift of passion.

Variety and Speech Community free essay sample

Diglossia is the relationship between two or more codified dialects that are used in the same speech community under different circumstances. Diglossia is categorised into two important hallmarks, the (H) high function which is seen as the superior dialect that is based on a grammatical system. It is formalised of rules, hence allowing thoughts and ideas to be expressed logically. However, the (L) function is connected to the standardised language of the speech community. It is used to express ideas and feelings close to one’s thoughts. The (L) variety is the first dialect that is taught to children as the mother tongue language followed by the (H) variety in schools. It is important however, to be able to distinguish between the context in which both the (H) and (L) varieties are used otherwise the individual is seen as a mockery. However, the ability to use both the (H) and (L) varieties in one speech community is acceptable as they can be used to complement each other when used in the right context. We will write a custom essay sample on Variety and Speech Community or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page An example of the (H) and (L) variety is evident in the Arabic speech community, the Arabs are expected to use the (H) variety for education, politics and religion, as the (L) variety is not accepted in formal domains unless used to explain the ideas or concepts further. Thus, diglossia does play an important role within specific speech communities; however it is evident that trends of diglossia are continuously changing. Over time the change of trends can result in the (H) function of dialect fading due to the increase use of the (L) variety as the standard language. This can be problematic as the (H) variety is connected to religion, literature and education. In addition, the change between the (H) and (L) variety of a language in different domains can result in learning difficulties later on in life.

The Life and Death of a Pharao essays

The Life and Death of a Pharao essays The Life and death of a Pharaoh TUTANKHEM King Tutankhamen was one of many Pharaohs of Egypt who ruled roughly between 3100 B.C. and 341 B.C. To many he was one of the most famous, however, not the greatest of all pharaohs. Who exactly was this king, whom many referred to as The Boy King. In this report I will briefly take a look at who his parents were, the period in which he reigned, and his death. Looking at the life of King Tut, we find and see that very little or virtually nothing was recorded concerning his life. Most of what has been learned was derived from many of the artifacts found in his tomb. In fact, practically nothing was known of Tutankhamen, when Howard Carter, the archaeologist, encourage by his findings in the Valley of the Kings, undertook, with Lord Carnarvons moral and material support, to find his grave (Desroches-Noblecourt 16). Mr. Carter discovered this fascinating tomb in November 1922. It took him approximately seven years of hard dedicated and deligent digging and searching before this great discovery was made. However, his diligence gave us a little more information about the possible parents of the king. There is much uncertainty ad speculation as to the actual parents of King Tut. His father is pretty much narrowed down between King Amenophis III and Amenophis IV who preceded him as Pharaoh. Among the kings burial treasury therere some references to his possible parents (particularly pointing to his father as Amenophis III). However there isnt enough to evidence to secure its absolute certainty. According to Desroches-Noblecourt, Only in one inscription upon a lion consecrated in the temple of Soleb and later taken further south to Gebel Barkal in the Sudan does Tutankhamen call Amenophis III his father. Many authors refuse to take this literally and regard it simply as a general reference to a royal ancestor. Indeed, am...

Comparison between Electoral Systems and Movement Organising Essay

Comparison between Electoral Systems and Movement Organising - Essay Example This essay discusses that  using people’s power has positive aspects such as the appeal of having the masses in support of the change they need. When the masses are in solidarity in demanding for a particular action from the government, there is much more international attention focussed on the situation that forces the concerned parties in authority to take appropriate actions to correct the situation. Moreover, when the people act in solidarity to demand change, they have much more strength and motivation to see it done. This paper declares that the negative aspects of peoples’ power are that it can lead to violence resulting in injuries or even loss of lives. In some cases, it leads to a prolonged instability in the region or country affected. An example of the case where the peoples’ power took control was in the Arab revolution in Egypt when the Egyptians rose against the then regime of President Hosni Mubarak. The Egyptian protests mainly concerned politic al issues and legal issues that they claimed to treat them poorly. After they had succeeded to over through President Hosni, there were political reforms, even though instability remains a big challenge to date.  The number of registered voters who vote usually reduces under any normal circumstance. Movement building can be used to improve on the voter turnout more conveniently than the electoral system. Usually when the masses participate in demonstrations such as the peoples’ power, the struggling communities take a large part in the participation.

Library an Internet Essay Example for Free

Library an Internet Essay The internet and the library , both are the considered to be a big depository of information .Library can be defined as [1]â€Å"A collection of literary documents or records kept for reference or borrowing† While Internet is defined as [2]â€Å"An electronic network providing access to millions of resources worldwide. University Libraries provide access to many periodical indexes through the Internet. Internet access is available on all floors of the Libraries.† Internet and the library both seems to be serving the same purpose but as the time goes by and world moves to new innovations and directions , the question arises is the latter going to replace the former . This essay compares and contrasts the Internet and an Library , how they share a common purpose and how they vary from each other while serving the purpose . Both the internet and an Library provides information on a wide array of topics but it may be not be necessary that library in United states has the books or journals about the History of Asian countries like china , India . Even if an American Library does has the books and information on the Asian history it may not as exhaustive as it would be in the libraries based in Asia itself . It is not possible to have the same set of books and information in all the libraries. Not all the books available in the Library of the Lindenwood university would be same as available in the libraries of Delhi University at India . Although noticeable works like the ones of Shakespeare would be definitely on the shelves of both the libraries .But its not always necessary that less known authors or journals will make to each library. While on the other hand information available on internet is universal , the same information can be accessed in all the computers worldwide . There is no regional version of internet just about anyone and everyone can access the same information whether it is done with a internet connection in India or in Americas .

Geothermal Energy Essays -- Science Energy Chemistry Essays

Geothermal Energy Geothermal energy is a superior source of energy because it is constantly being produced. Radioactive decay of nuclei with long half lives that were imbedded in the Earth’s interior during its genesis accounts for seventy percent of the globe’s internal energy. The remainder of this energy is derived from either the residual heat left over form the Earth’s formation, gravitational forces, or meteorite impacts. Geothermal energy is available anywhere on the planet. On average the Earth emits one sixteenth of a watt per meter squared, however this number can dramatically increase in regions near volcanoes, hot springs and fumaroles. Therefore, the uniqueness of each location around the world causes the Earth’s internal heat to be stored underground in many different natural structures. In some areas, the globe’s heat is stored in the rocks that form the Earth. There is a normal temperature increase, called the Normal Geothermal Gradient, of 30 degrees Celsius for every kilometer dug below the Earth’s surface. However, the precise amount of temperature increase that occurs as one’s depth increases is not a constant over the entire surface, it depends on the rock’s temperature. Therefore, in hotter sections of the planet there is Hot Dry Rock which produces an increase in temperature of forty degrees for every kilometer dug below the surface. In additi on, a reserve of geothermal heat even hotter than the solid rock type is molten magma, which is melted rock. Also, some regions of the planet house underground aquifers that use water to store large quantities of heat. Some areas contain vast hot water pools deep below the surface called Hot Water Reservoirs. In other places the conditions are r... ...ability it will surely be developed much more extensively in the near future. This source of energy will also be able to be used for a long time into the future because geothermal energy’s sources will continue to replace the energy used. In addition, it is estimated that the Earth can produce 600,000 exajoules of energy over five million years. This rate is believed to be enough energy to fulfill human energy requirements for the rest of the biosphere. Ray Bradbury s Fahrenheit 451 Government Control And...

In 1947, the United States of America faced the beginning of the Cold War. The Cold War lasted about 45 years. Within that time; in 1953, one of the most influential American authors published his Science-Fiction novel, Fahrenheit 451. Fahrenheit 451 is about a Dystopian culture in which books are forbidden, and burned. Burning the books is a type of censorship, in which the citizens are only permitted to read books that have been preapproved by the government. The conflicts and concerns expressed in Senator Joseph R. McCarthy’s speech that give rise to the society and atmosphere created by Ray Bradbury in Fahrenheit 451 is government control and fear. In Senator McCarthy’s speech delivered on February 9, 1950 he showed the world a whole new side of the trusted government they thought the United States had; the Communist side. In McCarthy’s speech he begins by speaking of the day being the birthday of our past President Abraham Lincoln. Then gradually alludes to the fear that he feels for the security of the United States. One of the first points that McCarthy makes is, â€Å"This is a time of ‘the cold war.’ This is a time when all of the world is split into two vast, increasingly hostile armed camps†¦ Today we can almost physically hear the mutterings and rumblings of an invigorated god of war.† McCarthy uses words like â€Å"hostile† and â€Å"invigorated god of war† showing the people that the threat is real. That they shouldn’t ignore it. McCarthy is looking for a response in hisShow MoreRelatedFahrenheit 451 Critical Essay1607 Words   |  7 PagesBook Report 1 Fahrenheit 451 Critical Essay Human beings are naturally curious. Ray Bradbury uses the novel to show concern with the idea of censorship and how it might affect the society. The theme of censorship is obvious through the banning and burning of books. At first they only censored the books that made people think and contemplate ideas that could result in obeying the law. However, they censored a ll books, which the government aimed at takingRead MoreThe Use of Parallelism in Fahrenheit 451 Essays889 Words   |  4 Pages The book that will be reviewed is Fahrenheit 451, written by Ray Bradbury. In America, technology has severely affected the way free speech is used and/or viewed. We are given the right to free speech to an extent. We are given free speech while the government has the power of censorship making our words selective and politically correct. This causes outbursts of anger by the public.
